Pastor's Welcome

Richard_Aasman v3Welcome to the website of the Providence Canadian Reformed in Edmonton. We are grateful that you found us on the Internet and that you are having a look at our website. Hopefully you will get to know something about us as a church community. At the heart of church life is the preaching of God’s Word twice every Sunday. We believe that the entire Bible is God-breathed, infallible, authoritative and sufficient for both matters of faith and lifestyle. You will discover the preaching opens every part of the Bible and shows how it has application for young and old. We discover that Jesus Christ is our only and complete Saviour, and that those who belong to him and keep in step with the Holy Spirit will also bear the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5:22,23).”

Our church is a city congregation and has a diversity of cultural groups. We have a fair number of Nuer brothers and sisters who come from South Sudan. They also have a separate worship service in their own language on most Sundays. The diversity of our congregation is a real blessing in that it reflects the new song sung by the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders in Revelation 5:9 in honour of Jesus Christ who was worthy: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation and language and people and nation.” We believe that every person who wants to hear the good news about Jesus Christ will feel at home in our congregation because of our joy in our cultural diversity.

My name is Richard Aasman. I am married to Joanne and together we have five children who are all married and have children of their own. Sunday evening family dinner has twenty-four of us around the table. Since we all belong to the church, our discussion often turns to the sermons we heard on Sunday, and any other interesting topic that comes up. The Word of God is so rich and powerful in shaping marriages, families and all relationships. Personally, I feel that my marriage and family have shaped my preaching and teaching, and it is something I try to share with others. This is one of the strong benefits of attending the worship services in the Providence congregation: I believe that it leads to strong marriages, families, the church family, and relationships in everyday life.

I have been a minister over 30 years, and have spent most of that time as minister in the Providence church. When the worship service is over, I stand in the foyer greeting everyone as they leave the church building. I love meeting church members and visitors alike. I don’t preach to an audience, but to real people I know and love.

If you are in our area, we joyfully welcome you to our worship services. Please take time to stop and chat with me or any member of the congregation so that we can personally welcome you. God bless you.  To contact me directly please send an email to pastor@providencereformed.ca.
